I have just been reminded - inevitably, by it happening - that there are some features we need to turn off in the system in order to handle the load of large on sale.
They are
- The “People who bought this also bought that” recommendations
- The “Limited Availability” warnings that are displayed when a show has nearly sold out.
Both of these features inevitably hit the database hard, which is fine for normal operations, but which causes problems when more than a couple of hundred people all show up on the home page at once.
If we get advance notice of a big on-sale, then we can disable them to ensure the smoothest possible operation.
